Nostalgic Morning with Popeye
This morning hit different.
No, not because the sun looked aesthetic but because I sat next to my mom and we stumbled upon Popeye the Sailor Man. And just like that, BOOM! A whole truckload of childhood memories crashed into my sleepy brain.
I swear, that catchy tune “I’m Popeye the Sailor Man, toot toot” still slaps.
Mom chuckled and said something that lowkey melted my heart:
"I used to make you eat food while playing this cartoon. You thought eating greens would give you superpowers like Popeye!”
Damn. That hit.
Back then, I believed in two things:
1. Popeye can literally knock out anyone with a single green-powered punch.
2. If I ate my greens, I’d probably grow biceps overnight and save Olive Oyl from Brutus too.
I’d sit there, spoon in one hand, eyes glued to the screen cheeks puffed, pretending to be Popeye. Mom would feed me like it was a mission and honestly, we were a team. She was the real MVP, turning boring meals into mini adventures with a cartoon soundtrack in the background.
Looking at it now, Popeye wasn’t just a cartoon—it was a whole vibe. A green-powered icon that made me believe vegetables had magic, that love was goofy, and that even with one eye squinting and a pipe in your mouth, you could be a hero.
Today, watching it again, I saw more than a sailor.
I saw my baby self.
I saw mom’s tired eyes lighting up just to make me eat.
I saw love, energy, and greens blended into moments I’ll always hold close.
