Women Equality a Myth or a Reality?
Hey readers! Hope you are doing great...I am Safa, to elucidate about yet another age-old question, "Women Equality a Myth or a Reality?" Revered readers, what do you presume it to be a myth or a reality? I would like you to just ponder upon this topic and kindly peruse it.
First, let me bring to limelight, what do you think about the equality of women during the Vedic Period? You may feel perplexed but the answer is, women during the Vedic Period enjoyed equal and ecstatic status with men in all aspects of life. Works by ancient Indian grammarians such as Patanjali and Katyayana suggest that, women were educated in early vedic period. Women possessed zestful power and personalities . They have ruled over empires ably and effectively. Besides capable administration they were notable poets, scholars, artist and regional leaders . After reading this I believe, you would feel as if on cloud 9 and yes, you would have felt kinda queer.
However, I feel subpar to say that destiny had something in-store for women during the later 18th and 19th century. The condition of them was naive and they were subjected to all sorts of social evils such as: child marriage, female foeticide, infanticide, sati, dowry, purdah system, maltreatment. Some men were nonchalant towards women and it was not a resilient situation then.
India was fighting against the clutches of british wherein, women were fighting to emancipate themselves from the wicked customs and social evils.
Let me portray with some freedom fighters who fought fearlessly they are: Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Swami Vivekanand, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar...who tirelessly fought against the social evils prevailing in the Indian Society and worked as the messenger for modern education in India during the british period.
Gandhi ji, also worked in uprooting various social evils in the society which prevailed at that time. Raja Ram Mohan Roy launched many campaigns to provide equal rights to untouchables and improve women status in the society. Gandhi worked on women empowerment, education for all and opposed child marriages.
With the achievement of freedom, woman standard of living was raised. They were considered equal and there were no more restrictions. Now, I really feel glad because presently, women are just waiting to spread their wings and fly.
Yet, in the latest census there are 717.10 million males and 662.90 million females . The percentage of female population is only 48.04 percent compared to 51.96 percent male population.
At this juncture, I quote Ms Malala Yousafzai, the youngest Nobel Laureate, "I raise up my voice - not so I can shout, but so that those without voice can be heard ....We cannot succeed when half of us are held back."
Today, women are subject in all sorts of social evils and crimes like female foeticide, infanticide, maternal malnutrition, rape, murder and even deprivation from education.
There is no place safe for women even in workplace, households, roads and buses. Crime rate is looming large. Every few paralyzed seconds women are raped all across the world.
The males are adamant that women are biologically weaker sex and their only work is child bearing.
In the last two decades, there is a sea change as now women can be found in all fields of work like physicians, nursing, teaching, IT, engineers, auto drivers, directors etc.....
I feel jubilant to say that women are excelling in all fields. They have become greatest entrepreneurs too. They are giving vibrant ideas and enriching views to progress our nation. I always believe that, in order to require success there should be tremendous amount of patience and tolerance. And I would love to express a few lines from a poem about women empowerment.
I admired her...
Not for her smile,
Though it was beautiful.
Not for her eyes,
Though they shone brightly.
I admired her...
For the battle scars,
And war wounds,
That she displayed.
Proudly, for the world to see.
I admired her, for her strength and for her courage.
Thus, in my opinion, women equality is no longer a myth but a reality.
At last, I would request all of you to join hands with a sense of collective responsibility by going that extra mile in order to accomplish this vision and march towards a perfect tomorrow. Revered readers, it is time to press the refresh button of our life. From my side, it is an affirmative yes! What about you???
