A Humble Leader Who Left a Lasting Legacy
Sitaram Yechury, the stalwart of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), is no longer with us. It’s hard to believe that someone so full of life and wisdom is no more. Last year, I had the incredible opportunity to meet him in Delhi, and it was an experience that will stay with me forever.
Yechury was not just any leader. He was a force in Indian politics, a man who dedicated his entire life to upholding the values of socialism, equality, and justice. Born in 1952 in Chennai, Comrade Yechury's journey was nothing short of inspiring. He became involved with the CPI(M) during his college days at Jawaharlal Nehru University, where he was known for his sharp intellect and passion for people’s movements. As the General Secretary of CPI(M), he carried forward the legacy of leaders like EMS Namboodiripad, ensuring that the voice of the working class remained loud and clear in the corridors of power.
But what struck me most when I met him wasn’t just his political stature—it was his humility. Despite all his accomplishments, he sat down with us as if we were equals, answering every question patiently and thoughtfully. After visiting the Supreme Court, I was exhausted, but the moment I started talking to Comrade Yechury, his energy was contagious. He spoke at length about the importance of youth in shaping the future of this country. For him, young people were the torchbearers of change, and he believed in the power of ideas, especially from the younger generation.
What followed was truly unforgettable—dining with him, exchanging stories and experiences. He shared insights into the current political climate and his vision for a better India. The conversation was refreshing, filling me with a sense of purpose and energy, even after a tiring day.
Meeting great leaders is always special, but there was something different about meeting Comrade Yechury. His presence was calming, his words profound, and his demeanor one of genuine kindness. He wasn’t just a political figure; he was a mentor, someone who believed in nurturing young minds and pushing them towards a future filled with possibilities.Today, as I think back to that day, I’m filled with sadness. The loss of Comrade Yechury feels personal, like the country has lost a guiding light. He was a voice of reason in an increasingly polarized world, always standing up for what he believed in with unwavering conviction. His work with CPI(M) and his vision for a just society will remain his legacy, but his warmth and humility are what I will carry with me forever.
